Healing Words Chat
Confidential Online Chat With Cancer Survivors
Cancer is one of those words that carries so much weight. It stirs emotions, fears, aloneness, and for many, an overwhelming sense of shame. This shame often manifests in silence, with many individuals choosing to keep their diagnosis hidden from family, friends, and the world. But why? Why do we feel so ashamed? Why do so many women remain silent at the very time we need to have a voice?
For most types of cancer, Black people have the highest death rate and shortest survival of any racial/ethnic group in the United States. Though Black women are diagnosed with breast cancer at a lesser rate than other women, our mortality rate is approximately 26% higher, according to several studies done by many cancer research institutes. There are numerous, and varied reasons for this disparity; but the primary reason, which no one talks about, is our shame, and our silence, which allows us to ignore early signs of illness, and put off seeking immediate medical attention. Healing Words Chat wants to not only give us a voice, but also provide a platform where survivors can find understanding, empathy, support, encouragement, and information. A safe place where we can discuss the varied reasons why! By sharing our stories, we can empower one another, heal, find resources, and change these dire statistics!

MY PERSONAL STORY
Both my mother and sister were breast cancer survivors. My mother lived more than 27 years beyond her prognosis of 6 months, and my sister continues to live more than 30+ years cancer-free. In July 2012, I too was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer and underwent a bilateral mastectomy, DIEP abdominal flap surgery, chemotherapy, latissimus flap surgery and numerous plastic surgical procedures. My full story can be read in my book below, “AT WAR WITH BREAST CANCER." What I had to come to terms with is that as a survivor, I not only suffered and struggled physically, but also mentally, emotionally, and even spiritually. Some survivors often expressed feelings of being afraid, feeling alone, not knowing what the future holds. Others feel their cancer diagnosis means immediate, eminent death. Yet, there are others who simply feel shame, wondering what they did to invite this dis-ease into their lives and bodies. By taking control of our health, researching, studying, remembering we are the head of our medical team, we are able to become more informed about cancer and its impact in our individual lives. We encourage survivors to investigate their own unique cases of cancer, and become more informed. Together, we are able to release the fear, the shame and the silence, and share our stories. We are not mere survivors, WE ARE THRIVERS!
